Frankies Red Dragon Fruit is a hybrid variety that comes from the genus and species of Selenicereus megalanthus and Hylocereus polyrhizus. Research collected has stated that this variety of Selenicereus megalanthus occurred naturally in wild nature. Spicy Exotics acquired two plants of this variety from two different tropical nurseries that are both in California.
Growth
The growth of Frankies Red is three-sided and olive green in color. Three small spins occur along the edge of the cutting, and the cutting is often tiny and long. Two significant challenges growing this variety are one it is susceptible to heat and cold. Secondly, during excess amounts of rainfall, this variety tends to experience rust. For these two reasons, Spicy Exotics does not recommend this variety for beginners.
Flower
The flower is a medium-sized bloom, with inner petals white while the outer petals are yellow and white. The shape of the flower resembles a bell when fully open. The flower buds are different compared to other Selenicereus species and resemble Hylocereus species instead. Flowers open just after sunset and close at sunrise. Flowers are self-fertile, but we recommend hand pollination to ensure fruit to set.
Fruit
The fruit is very similar in shape and size when compared to a Yellow Dragon fruit. When the fruit emerges, it turns from green to yellow, then orange. When ready to eat, the color of the flesh is red with white highlights in the center of the fruit. The fruit also has a beautiful sweetness with an average brix rating of 21.
